Two students of Gulu University have Tuesday morning been arrested for inciting violence.

The suspects are: Job Tumussimwe and Alumansi Katongole and are being detained at the Central Police Station (CPS), Gulu.

A security source privy to the arrests told The Gazette that at 10am, the police received information from University authorities that government sponsored students were rioting over living allowance.

The riot, sources add, forced the Vice Chancellor and staff to lock themselves in their offices as protests continued outside.

“Students surrounded their (VC’s) offices, chanting vulgar words with intent to incite violence,” a source said and said: “the University Authorities tried to engage with them but without fruitful results.”

Against the above background, two ring leaders were arrested.

“Much as the aggrieved student bodies had a concern to raise, the method used to present their issues were uncalled for. The student representatives needed to explore dialogue with the University Authorities to channel better means of resolving their grievances,” Aswa Region Police Spokesperson, ASP David Ongom-Mudong, confirmed the incident, adding, “the police, however, would wish to caution the student fraternity to desist from engaging in criminal activities of inciting violence and malicious damage to property through barbaric acts of hooliganism.”
