Two people have died after a gold mine collapsed on them.
The deceased have been identified as Salimu Kagezi and Elizabeth Atyang, residents of Taking cell, Tiira Town Council and Kamuge Sub County in Pallisa district respectively.
According to sources, the duo had gone to steal sand when soil came down on them.
“The deceased climbed/trespassed and entered inside the private mine belonging to Greenstone Resources Limited Gold mines to steal sand when the incident happened,” a source told the Kampala Gazette.
Regional Police Spokesperson James Mugwe confirmed the incident.
Mugwe said inquiries are on going to ascertain the cause of the accident.
He, however, cautioned “our people to avoid getting involved in criminal activities that end up costing their lives, but instead, they should engage in lawful income-generating activities that don’t involve such serious risks as death.”
