GCW, Obua, Tips Makerere University Alumni in Parliament to Champion 100 Years Celebration

The Government Chief Whip, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua has tipped the Makerere University alumni in Parliament to champion the 100 years celebration cause slated for October 6, 2022.

Obua made the appeal on Wednesday during a meeting chaired by the Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa at the latter’s office.

“Parliament has a good number of alumni of Makerere University including former guild presidents. They will and should take the opportunity to move a motion that we shall give it the deserving priority,” said Obua.

The Government Chief Whip noted that the MUK alumni in Parliament will also be in position to expound on their journey from Makerere and how the country’s oldest and largest institution of learning has impacted on their leadership.

“They (alumni) especially the former guild presidents should be able to share with us their journey and leadership while at Makerere and how it has continued to shape their ascendancy,” said Obua.

The development followed a visit to Parliament by the Makerere University officials led by the Council Chairperson Mrs. Lorna Magara and the Vice Chancellor Prof.Barnabas Nawangwe.

Nawangwe also appealed to Parliament to revise the daily meal allowance of Shs4,500 for the Government sponsored students to Shs10,000 due to inflation.

“The Shs4,500 given to Government sponsored students for 3 meals a day is no longer sustainable. We are appealing to Parliament for the revision of the meal allowance per student to at least Shs10,000,” said Nawangwe.

Obua assured Nawangwe that Parliament is also going to expedite the Bills related to Makerere University .

The meeting was also attended by the Commissioner of Parliament, Solomon Silwany and the Opposition Chief Whip, John-Baptiste Nambeshe.

Makerere kick-started the century celebrations last year with the climax expected on 6 October at the university’s main campus in Kampala. Parliament has already pledged Shs50m to help in the organizing of the event.
