Robert Maseruka, a man whose Mak Guild victory ends 22-year curse

By Executive Editor

Robert Maseruka, a third-year student of Journalism and Communication, Monday swore in to lead his 89th guild administration of Makerere University.

On April 14, 2023, Maseruka garnered 2,558 votes in the online voting exercise. His closest contender, Hillary Oremo Odwee managed to pocket 2,531 votes.

The other contestants were Sabiiti Akankunda who got 2334, Julius Birigwa with 11 votes, Baraka Nkoyooyo who got 841 votes and Mark Ssebunya who clinched 53 votes.

Others are Evans Murungi who got 189, Emmanuel Wanyama who scored 180 and Andrew Lubinga Ssemakula who got 186.

His win broke a 22-year-old curse. The Journalism and Communication Department of Makerere University last produced a Guild President in 2001 when a well-schooled Fred Mukasa Mbidde won the guild polls that year.

Speaking shortly after taking oath, Maseruka vowed to address challenges faced by students such as delayed allowances for government sponsored students and ‘inconsistencies’ in the current Makerere University students’ statute 2022 and guild constitution.
