COP28: Global South tasks donor countries on US$ 100 billion pledge

By Davis Mugabi

The 28th Session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP28) commences in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on November 30, 2023.

COP negotiations are hinged on ensuring that the world meets the Paris Agreement’s central goal, which is “to strengthen the global response to the threat of Climate Change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.“

During the COP28, the Global South wants the Global North to among others to honour their commitments to close up the US$ 100 billion this year. The pledge is part of the Paris Agreement.

Other demands are:

A position on the inevitable and essential phase down of fossil fuels, and a call for the tripling of renewable energy output to 11,000 gigawatts by the Parties; Call for comprehensive transformation of climate finance instead of piecemeal reform and double adaptation finance by 2023, among others.

The COP28 ends on December 12, 2023 in Dubai.
