Covid-19: Museveni could miss NAM, G77 Summits

By Davis Mugabi

President Yoweri Museveni could miss NAM and G77 Summits, Kampala Gazette officially reports.

Uganda will host the 19th Summit of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Heads of State and Government, a forum of 120 member states from 15 to 20 January 2024, at the Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort. Then from 21 to 23 January, at the same venue, Uganda will host the Third South Summit, organized under the framework of Group 77 and China, a loose alliance of developing countries.

However, with the Thursday announcement, Museveni’s presence for the two summits hangs in the balance.

On Thursday evening, Museveni announced that his wife, Janet, tested positive for Covid-19, and has gone into self-isolation.

Museveni did not reveal the implication of the First Lady’s situation on the function of the President. However, ordinarily, the President should also be under a watch, preferably for a period of about two weeks. Depending on the findings of his doctors, Museveni could miss NAM and G77 Summits.

For the next three years, from 2024 to 2026, Museveni will formally succeed President IIhame Aliyev of Azerbaijan as Chairman of NAM.
