Lake Victoria: Fisher chooses to die instead of being captured by UPDF officers on patrol

Police in Buikwe has registered a drowning case, which occured on the 9/1/2024 at 0200/hrs in Kivubu Village, Ssi Bukunja Sub-County. This incident was reported by Bamweyana Lawrence, aged 53 years, chairman LC1 a, resident of Nalyazi village, Lugoba Parish, Sis County, Buikwe District.

It’s alleged that Kigongo Gerald and Kayungo Francis were carrying out illegal fishing in the waters of Lake Victoria near the landing site of Kivubu

On 08/01/2024, at around 2000hrs, as they saw the boat of army officers carrying out patrol on the waters against illegal fishing, they both jumped in to the lake, trying to evade the arrest. One Kayongo Francis was rescued from the lake alive, while his friend Kigongo Gerrald, 34, got drowned and died. However, the army officers tried to rescue Kigongo, but unfortunately he was trapped by a heavy illegal fishing net.
Regional Police Spokesman Hellen Butoto confirmed the incident.

Butoto says that the body has been handed over to the relatives for burial.
