Kanyamunyu was released early because of discipline and hard work – Uganda Prisons

By Executive Editor

Uganda Prisons has explained the circumstances under which Matthew Kanyamunyu was released.

MBP-4321/22 Kanyamunyu was discharged from Murchison Bay Prison, Luzira, this morning at around 10:00 a.m. Kanyamunyu had been convicted of manslaughter by the High Court and sentenced to 5 years and 1 month on November 12, 2020. After computing remission, his imprisonment was reduced from the Latest Possible Date of Discharge (LPD) of December 11, 2024, to the Earliest Possible Date of Discharge (EPD) of 12/4/2024.

In a statement on Friday, Uganda Prisons explained that ‘Remission’ is a prison management practice where a portion of a prisoner’s sentence is reduced by 1/3 as a reward for discipline and hard work.

“Uganda Prison Service adheres to the fulfillment of its mission by providing safe, secure, and humane custody of offenders while placing human rights at the center of their correctional programs,” said Prisons Spokesman Frank Baine.
