2026 POLLS: Mao to contest for MP, take shot at Speaker job
By Simon Komakech
The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, is reportedly considering running for a parliamentary seat in Gulu.
Words on the streets of Gulu indicate that Mao intends to run for the Gulu City East MP seat. The seat is currently held by Fr. Charles Onen.
“It is still a rumor,” said a journalist based in Gulu. This was after this reporter asked him about reports of Mao returning to Parliament. “You will know once it’s confirmed.”
Last week, there were reports that Mao was equally eyeing the seat of Speaker of Parliament. However, this can only come after he succeeds back home.
Proponents of the rumor suggested that the region wants the Speaker seat back. The seat was previously held by Jacob Oulanyah (RIP).
This has reportedly caused unease in the corridors of Parliament. Days ago, ChimpReports, an online news publication, reported that Speaker of Parliament Anita Among had summoned Members of Parliament (MPs) from West Nile, Lango, and Acholi Regions. “It would not be unusual,” Chris Obore, the Director of Communications, Parliament of Uganda, told ChimpReports in a comment.
