The government, through the Ministry of Works and Transport, is expected to start receiving bid documents for the construction of the Kampala-Jinja Expressway.
The project is expected to be a dual carriage expressway between Kampala and Jinja.
Works and Transport Minister Gen. Katumba Wamala was on Wednesday presiding over the 14th FiRe Awards as chief guest when he gave an update on the project.
He said that after receiving bid documents this month, the project will have a contractor by December.
The project road forms a component of the vital international highway connecting Uganda to the port of Mombasa on the Kenya coast. Moreover, this international highway also functions as the primary transit corridor for transportation of imports via Kenya and Uganda to other landlocked countries west of Uganda, primary amongst which are the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, and Sudan. The proposed new construction aims to relieve severe traffic congestion with substantially increased traffic capacity and reduced travel time.
