By Samuel Mukisa

Businessman, Odrek Rwabogo, has ventured into coffee farming.

Rwabogo is not to be a milk and beef processor and export.

He revealed Wednesday at Skyz Hotel in Naguru that he has joined the Coffee sector as a farmer.

“I am a heavy coffee drinker. I take 8 cups a day & now I am going into coffee growing. I have planted 20 acres. The research I have done shows that the growth curve of coffee beats beef and milk, the sectors I am involved in,” said Rwabogo, revealing that he was at the stakeholders’ meeting on an invitation of the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze.

Rwabogo’s revelation came at an engagement meeting of all the coffee sector players.

Odrek Rwabogo is quoted to have said.

Uganda’s strategy, through the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) is to be producing 20 million bags of coffee per year by 2025, compared to the current 6.8 million bags.

UCDA Managing Director, Dr. Emmanuel Iyamulemye, however says the Coffee Roadmap (which was the centre of discussion) is not just 20m bags.

“It is income for our people. This is critical because overall, we want to see increased income for Ugandan coffee farmers & those who rely on coffee for a livelihood. The true north is households with improved livelihoods,” said Iyamulemye.
