A Grade I Magistrate has come under fire for freeing a remanded Turkish national at 6pm.
The Magistrate attached to Nakawa court has been identified as Irene Akello.
According to documents available, on June 10, 2022, a Turkish national and Country Manager of Gulsan Construction Company identified as Mehmet Ozgur Bilir appeared before Akello on charge of trafficking in person, malicious damage and causing grievous harm, to an I.T specialist Felix Arim.
Bilir was later remanded. However, as they waited for the prisons bus, Bilir was freed at 6m without the notice of the complainant, State Prosecutor nor the investigator.
In a complaint formally filed before the Inspectorate of Courts and received June 14, 2022, Arim wants Akello dropped from handling his case and another official allocated to the case. He also wants the conduct of the Judicial officer probed and punished if found wanting.
Nakawa Judicial officers are not new to these things.
In 2017, a grade two magistrate attached to Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court Agnes Napiyo was charged before the Anti-Corruption Court with two counts of corruption and abuse of office.
Napiyo denied the allegation.
Court heard that between March 2, 2017 and April , 2017 at Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court, Napiyo corruptly solicited for Shs 1 million and received Shs 700,000 from a one Vincent Amam Egesa as an inducement to reverse a child custody ruling in his favor.
