President Yoweri Museveni has Thursday revealed why he chose Dar es Salaam over Makerere University.

The President is a graduate of Economics and Political Science from Dar es Salaam University in Tanzania.

Officiating today at Makerere Uiversity’s Centenary Celebrations, the President said: “I am one of the people who refused to come to Makerere [after HS].”

When we were putting choices, the President added: “all my choices were Dar es Salaam because I wanted to be near Nyerere who was being talked about as someone who wanted East African integration.”

He, however, went on to congratulate the University, “especially the science department.”

“The prima of social economic change is science & technology. This is why 70% of scholarships should go to sciences. If you don’t deal with science, you might not even exist, you may disappear or survive at mercy of others. I won’t allow this in Uganda. The faculties of medicine, agriculture, engineering, food science and ICT have done well and should be encouraged,” the President said.

To my friends from the arts, he added: “we should be talking about economic integration & production for prosperity.”

The President says that “If we are to survive in the modern world we must deal with the issue of prosperity.”

You can’t be prosperous unless you produce more goods and services of all types, the President said.
