As 2022 comes to a close, the Kampala Gazette takes stock of it. In this edition, we take you through the persons this country lost in 2022.
Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile
Mutebile, 72; was an economist and banker. At the time of his death, he was the Governor, Bank of Uganda (since 2001).
Simon Lokodo
Lokodo, 64 was a politician and had previously served the Office of the President as Minister of States for Ethics. He was also a Member of Parliament, a position he lost in 2021. At the time of his death, he was working as a Member of the Uganda Human Rights Commission – UHRC.
Jacob Oulanyah.
Oulanyah, 56; was a lawyer and politician. He served Uganda as a Member of Parliament (Omoro County), Deputy Speaker and Speaker of Parliament until the time of his death.
Christine Dranzoa
Dranzoa, 55; was an educationist and scientist. At the time of her death, she was the Vice Chancellor, Muni University.
Gen. Elly Tumwine
The four-star General died in August 2022 at the age of 68. Tumwine served Uganda as a military officer, rising to the highest rank (General). He also served as a Member of Parliament representing the UPDF. However, at the time of his death, he was largely in retirement and serving as a senior Presidential advisor on matters of security.
Allan Kanyike
City socialite Allan Kanyike alias the Dynamite died days ago at Nsambya hospital. He is reported to have succumbed to a brain haemorrhage.
Augustine Osuban Lemukol
The late Emorimor of Teso died in February 2022. To date, his family speaks fondly of their father as a peace loving man who worked hard and lived by the virtues of honesty and integrity.
Alex Nawula
DJ Alex Ndawula aka Muchanchos died on June 6 at the age of 59 in Nsambya Hospital where he had been admitted with a sickness. At the time of his death, Ndawula had retired from the media but his legacy continues to run the airwaves.
John Mitala
The former Head of Public Service, John Mitala died on Saturday evening after spending months in hospital.
After more than 48 years in public service, Dr Mitala in September last year handed over office as the head of public service and secretary to cabinet to Lucy Nakyobe, the former State House comptroller.
Robert Charles Ogwang
Ogwang was murdered by an armed gang who also set his car ablaze on 08 July 2022 at Kiryowa Village along Bombo Road. At the time of his murder, Ogwang was the acting Chief Administrative Officer, Bukwo district.
MP Patrick Okabe
Okabe, his wife and driver died in a terrible accident five days ago. This was after the car he was being driven in collided head-on with a Kenyan truck in Budaka district. At the time of his death, Okabe was serving Serere County as Member of Parliament.
Moses Olemakun
Olemakun died in Nairobi exactly a week ago. At the time of his death, he was the LCV Chairman, Bukeda district.
Wilkinson Okae
Okae, a renowned biker had an accident about a week ago, and succumbed to injuries obtained in the accident. At the time of his death, he was largely retired but remained prominent in playing golf and motorsport until his demise.
