Varsity lecturers, staff, students injured in Expressway accident
University lecturers, staff and students were Saturday involved in an accident that left them injured.
The matter has been registered at Kajjansi Police Station.
Traffic Police say the incident happened at Kijapan along the Entebbe-Kampala Expressway at around 2pm and involved three vehicles: Registration Number UBL 801L (Toyota Land Cruiser; Registration Number UAW 023Z (Toyota Hiace aka Drone) and Registration Number UBL 890U (Toyota Hillux Double Cabin).
A total of eleven people were injured, Traffic and Road Safety Spokesperson, Faridah Nampiima said in a statement.
They include seven people that were occupants of the Drone, and have been identified as Dr Hassan Elnour Adam, 53, a Sudanese national and a professor at Kordofan University in Sudan; Habab Hafiz, 22, a Sudanese by nationality and a student at Islamic University In Uganda – IUIU; Mohamed Nour Taha, 55, a Sudanese by nationality and a lecturer at I.U.I.U; Dr. Zeinab Mohamed Hammad, 60, a Sudanese by nationality and professor at Khartoum University in Sudan; Dr. Awad Elkarim Suliman Osman, 40, a Sudanese by Nationality and a professor at Kordofan University; Ssali Ibrahim, 29, an accountant at I.U.I.U, Kibuli, Kampala campus; Ssebyala Ayub, 26, the driver; while four people that include Makwasi Hussein, 23, a student at Kyambogo university, and Katono Rehema, 43, the PRO/Lecturer at I.U.I.U and other 02 unidentified passenger were occupants of the Toyota Hilux. Their driver, Alex Akonye is on the run.
The Victims were all rushed to Doctors hospital-seguku for medication, Nampiima says.
It’s alleged that the driver of the Prado Land Cruiser was from the Entebbe side heading to Kampala via Expressway upon reaching Kijapan area, an Umeme electric wire suddenly sagged across the road nd immediately, the same driver stopped and switched on the parking Hazzard lights. Ayub Ssebyala, the driver of the Drone who was following the latter also stopped and put the car parking Hazzard. After a few seconds, a speeding Toyota Hilux (Double Cabin) rammed into the the Toyota Hiace (Drone) forcing it to hit the Land Cruiser.
Nampiima says further inquiries are on-going.
