UPDF officer’s murder turns ugly, mob attacks suspect’s families

Mob, in revenge for the murder of a UPDF officer, attacked families of the suspect, and burnt down houses.
On July 18, 2023 at around 1700hrs, a UPDF officer identified as Martin Mbayo and his friend Nolya went to drink in a bar owned by Robert Tabiruka Robert of Nabugala Trading Center in Kameruka sub-county.
While at the drinking joint, they drank up to 2200 hrs. However, a fight between the deceased and Tabiruka, the owner of the bar ensued. As a result, the deceased sustained severe injuries on the head. The victim was rushed to Mbale referral hospital for better management. While at Mbale referral hospital, the condition worsened, and was being rushed to Mulago hospital, when he passed on at Iganga.
Now, reports indicate that the mob has attacked families of the suspect (who remains on the run).
Facts obtained show that on July 22, 2023 at 2200hrs, unidentified persons came to the home of Kanyanta Samson and damaged permanent houses.
His son’s house, too, was damaged. This particular incident happened at Nabugalo Trading Center. Kanyanta alleges that after public getting information of the death of Mbayo, who is alleged to have been murdered by Kanyanta’s son, Kanyanta Robert alias Tabiruka., unidentified people (mob) attacked his home, that of Eric Kanyanta, David Masuge and that of Robert Kanyanta.
Among the items taken by the looters were turkeys, plastic chairs, iron sheets, tv, radio and unspecified items. He didn’t Identify anyone as he also ran away in fear of his life. He doesn’t know where all his sons ran to save their lives. No lives were lost in the incident. However, 5 houses were damaged and 3 huts burnt to ashes.
A case of malicious damage, arson and theft of unspecified items was registered Vide CRB 037/2023 of Budaka.
The body remains at Bugema Army Barracks in Mbale for a postmortem.
