President Yoweri Museveni has appointed AIGP Rtd. Abbas Byakagaba as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).

He replaces Martins Okoth Ochola, whose contract expired in March 2024.

Byakagaba will be deputized by AIGP James Ocaya.

Byakagaba’s appointment has had a good reception, especially on social media.

“The Kyadondo bombing case is one of the most challenging cases I have ever handled, made more complicated for the defense by the meticulous investigation led by Afande Abas Byakagaba. His timely appointment as IGP is sure to stop the rising crime in Kampala. Congratulations, my friend,” said lawyer Julius Galisonga.

According to journalist Sudhir Byaruhanga, Byakagaba is “a very well-composed, hardworking, and professional officer.”
“I remember him when he was under operations and counter terrorism,” added Byaruhanga.

“Great choice of Abbas Byakagaba,” said Michael Katungi.

Robert Tumusiime suggests that Byakagaba’s expertise in counter terrorism earned him the IGP job.

“Your expertise in counter terrorism coupled with hard work can never go unnoticed and unappreciated by the appointing authority,” said Tumusiime.

Byakagaba’s appointment is subject to vetting by Parliament.
