A police officer attached to Counter Terrorism is receiving praise for his discipline after he picked up a lost Shs 3 million and returned it to the owner. 

The officer is Chebet (in uniform). This incident happened at the High Court in Kampala.

Lawyer John Jet Tumwebaze said the officer deserves recognition. 

“Today, I’d like to celebrate this officer, Chebet, and another female colleague of his who today, at the High Court, picked my senior colleague’s three million and came and gave it to him,” said Tumwebaze. Tumwebaze is a partner at Kampala Associated Advocates (KAA). “We need to celebrate such officers,” he added. 

As of 2022, fewer than half of Ugandans trust the police, and the proportion who express no trust at all in the police has more than tripled since 2005. This is according to a policy paper first published by Afrobarometer. Afrobarometer is a pan-African, non-partisan research network conducting public attitude surveys.

According to the study, Uganda’s police are less trusted than other key governmental institutions in the country and rank among the least trusted and most corrupt police forces on the continent. 

Afrobarometer’s analysis also shows that citizens’ perceptions of and experiences with the Uganda police force are very poor. A majority of Ugandans say that most or all members of the police are corrupt, reads part of the policy paper.
