RIP: AGNES SEBOWA
Uganda has lost one of its strongest voices in the fight against teenage pregnancies and the promotion of adolescent health following the passing of Agnes Sebowa.
News of her death broke on social media on Tuesday morning, though the exact circumstances leading to her passing remain unclear.
Sebowa, widely recognized for her tireless advocacy on behalf of young people, dedicated her life to advancing reproductive health rights and empowering adolescents to live healthier lives.
Journalist Andrew Kyamagero paid tribute to Sebowa, describing her as a true health champion:
“This morning we lost a great soul, Agnes Ssebowa. We bid farewell to a true health champion. Her life’s work was a testimony of service, compassion, and excellence in advancing Uganda’s health sector. Agnes’ legacy of dignity, courage, and unwavering commitment to the vulnerable will remain a guiding light for us all. Grateful for all she stood for, we say: fare thee well, Agnes. Uganda will never forget you.”
Health expert Martha Mutumba also expressed her grief, writing simply:
“This is so sad.”
Sebowa’s work focused on reducing teenage pregnancies, improving access to health services, and ensuring adolescents were given platforms to thrive free from stigma and neglect. She worked closely with communities, policymakers, and civil society organizations to champion inclusive health policies.
Her passing is being described as a huge blow to Uganda’s health advocacy movement, with tributes continuing to pour in from health professionals, activists, and community leaders who worked alongside her.
