Akii Bua Stadium in Lira will not host matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to emerging details about venue allocations.
Uganda is set to co-host the tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania, with the competition scheduled to run from June 19 to July 18, 2027.
Sports journalist Peter Otai, citing documents from the AFCON secretariat, reported that Akii Bua Stadium has not been selected among the approved venues.
“Akibua Stadium won’t host AFCON. According to a document from the secretariat, Mandela and Hoima have been allocated,” Otai said.
This suggests that Uganda’s hosting duties will instead be centered around Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, and the Hoima Stadium, which is currently under development. Akii Bua is still way behind in terms of development.
There has been no official communication yet from government or CAF regarding the final list of venues.
The development is likely to disappoint stakeholders in Lira, where Akii Bua Stadium has been undergoing upgrades in anticipation of the continental tournament.
