An explosive goes off at KCCA staff’s home, injures five

Five people have been injured after an explosive device last night at the home of Jennifer Birungi, a cleaner at the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
The police say the incident happened at at Industrial Zone, Kagugube in Central Division in Kampala.
Preliminary findings show that Birungi’s daughter Katusiime was given second hand clothes by a friend only identified as Anita, who is in Dubai.
According to Birungi, they sorted the said clothes in their home yard. It is when they saw a metallic bottle with a blue colour and suspected it to be an explosive
Her granddaughter Elizabeth Poni threw it in the dust bin but her other granddaughter named Vanessa secretly collected it from the bin and brought it back to the house.
At about 9pm, she (Vanessa) started playing with it. She opened it and eventually it exploded, injuring five people in the house.
The Victims have been identified as Birungi, Harriet Kabasinguzi, 25, Poni, 1, Mitchell Nakandi, 2, Venessa Birungi, 10.
“The incident is being investigated with the view of identifying the exact origin of the explosive ordnance,” Kampala Metrolitan Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed Sunday morning.
He added: “The five victims are currently admitted at the National Referral Hospital at Mulago for treatment.”
He, however, noted that: “Our task team has recovered pieces of the explosive, which have been submitted to experts for analysis.”
Owoyesigyire appealed to members of the public to “report any items that look suspicious to the relevant authorities for safe handling. More details will be provided as investigations progress”
