In a world where profit and success are often measured by financial gain, Bernard Omuse, Director of Friends of Hope Cultural Centre, has always been driven by a passion to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children. Leaving behind a successful career as a bank manager at Centenary Rural Development Bank, a consultant for the World Savings and Retail Banking Institute based in Belgium and Eastern region Manager for Equity Bank, Bernard embarked on a journey to provide hope and opportunities to those who need it most.

The seeds of Friends of Hope were sown in Mubende, where Bernard served as a Bank Manager for the Postbank -Mubende branch. It was there that he and his friend Daniel stumbled upon a heart-wrenching scene – a one-day-old baby had been abandoned in an old pit latrine by its mother. Without hesitation, the two friends rushed the child to Mubende Hospital, saving its life. This poignant moment sparked a sense of purpose in Bernard, and together with Daniel, they decided to give the child hope. And so, Friends of Hope was born.

Today, Friends of Hope Cultural Centre is a beacon of hope in the rural town of Tororo, Uganda, providing educational opportunities to orphaned children, children living with HIV/AIDS, disabled children, street children, and youth. Bernard’s vision goes beyond just providing school fees; he believes in empowering these young minds with skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

Under Bernard’s leadership, Friends of Hope Cultural Centre has established a comprehensive program that combines academic support with vocational training, music, dance, and drama. The children are encouraged to explore their creative talents, building confidence and self-esteem. Notably, Bernard has partnered with ; The dancing world, Interfaith Community Sanctuary, Cycle Olympe and Abbey of the Arts to produce choreography for three songs – “Black Madonna,” “Calling Maria,” and “Sending You Light” – all of which can be found on YouTube.

One of Bernard’s most remarkable achievements is the establishment of Ma’s Junior School, which he built from scratch, starting with just one classroom. Today, the school is a thriving institution, providing a safe and nurturing environment for over 600 children.

In addition to his work in education, Bernard has also been involved in various community development projects. Friends of Hope has launched an afforestation initiative, planting over 3,500 trees in Tororo to combat climate change and provide a sustainable source of income for the local community. The organization has also conducted Peace Camps, fostering a sense of community and social cohesion among beneficiaries from diverse backgrounds.

Bernard’s story is a testament to the impact one person can have. His courage to leave behind a comfortable career and forge a new path is an inspiration to us all. As Friends of Hope continues to grow and expand its reach, Bernard’s legacy will undoubtedly be felt for generations to come.
