Bidco Uganda Ltd. partners with local organization to boost literacy levels in secondary schools in Busoga

By Davis Mugabi

Bidco Uganda Limited (BUL), Uganda’s giant in soap, washing powder, cooking oil, cooking fat, and spaghetti, among other products, has partnered with Zanam, a community-based organization (CBO) operating in the Busoga Sub region, to boost literacy levels in secondary schools.

Last Sunday, Zanam convened the 8th Quiz Competition at the Town Hall in Jinja. The quiz tests classroom and general knowledge in a bid to give hands-on knowledge as a result of the recent introduction of a new curriculum for secondary schools.

Triangle Secondary School-Iganga won the competition and was awarded a trophy, Shs 500, 000, scholastic materials (for participants), and gift hampers courtesy of Bidco.

PMM Girls’ School: Jinja came in second and was recognized with a trophy, Shs 300,000, scholar materials (for participants), and gift hampers containing Bidco products.

In third place was Central College, Kamuli. The school took home Shs 200, 000, a trophy, scholar materials for participants, and gift hampers, thanks to Bidco.

Zakia Namulondo, the organizer of the quiz competition, says literacy levels in the region are significantly improving as a result of the competition. For instance, she says that last year’s winner of the competition, Good Heart, Jinja, came in fifth in this year’s competition.

Namulondo commended Bidco for the support, both in cash and in products that go into the hampers.

She says that in total, Bidco put in Shs 29 million (in cash) and donated the different products to make the gift hampers.

Namulondo argued that the students need washing powder and soap, fat, cooking oil, and spaghetti so as to stay in school and that the partnership with Bidco is strategic.
