Col. Rtd. Dr. Kizza Besigye

Winnie Byanyima, the wife of jailed opposition leader Dr. Rtd. Kizza Besigye, has declared her readiness to participate in a nationwide walk calling for the release of her husband and his aide, Obeid Lutale.

Byanyima, who also heads UNAIDS, shared her solidarity message after quoting a post—later traced to a parody account—on the social media platform X.

“I will take a day off from my work and walk in solidarity with you, Ssemujju Nganda. I stand with you for justice, equality before the law, and freedom of speech and assembly. Thank you for your courageous leadership,” Byanyima stated.

The parody account had earlier posted a call for “a one-day nationwide march for Dr. Kizza Besigye and every political prisoner still alive,” saying such action might save their lives.

Dr. Besigye and Lutale have been in detention since their arrest in Kenya earlier this year, after being transferred to Uganda and charged with several offenses, including illegal possession of firearms. They have since missed recent court appearances, with their lawyers citing ill health.
