Tragedy struck on Lake Kyoga today when a transport boat capsized near Kiryanga village, Acii Sub-county in Amolatar District, leaving at least seven people dead and 29 others rescued.
According to police reports, the engine-powered boat, carrying 36 passengers, was en route from Muchora Abino A village to Kiryanga landing site. The group was escorting a local catechist, Alfred Oduno, who was traveling to attend the burial of his sister, the late Joyce Abuni.
At around 11:00 am, and just 400 meters from their destination, the boat struck a submerged tree stump, causing it to capsize. The impact led to the drowning of four women and three men, while dozens of passengers were saved.

The deceased have been identified as:
- Odeke Steven (65), LC1 Chairperson, Muchora Abino A village, Amolatar
- Aguti Catherine (55), resident of Okwalongen Sub-county, Dokolo
- Abonyo Sylvia (35), resident of Amuda village, Soroti
- Ogwal Jaspher (38), resident of Corner Bileo Trading Centre, Amolatar
- Ejang Robina (30), resident of Epel ward, Amolatar Town Council
- Agwech Semmy (20), resident of Etam Sub-county, Amolatar
- One unidentified male body
Police Response
A joint team of Amolatar Police and Zengebe Marine Unit, led by AIP Ibanda Alamanzani, visited the scene together with homicide detectives and SOCO officers. The bodies were recovered and taken to Amolatar Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Investigations revealed that the boat was overloaded and struck a submerged stump left behind after mainland trees were covered by rising lake waters. The boat itself is yet to be retrieved.
Police have opened inquiries into the incident, urging communities around Lake Kyoga to exercise caution, avoid overloading, and use safety gear such as life jackets.
