DPP drops Charges against city businessmen after Anti-Corruption’s malicious arrest
The director of public prosecution, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, yesterday dropped all malicious prosecution against city businessmen Semakula Sulait and Yusuf Semakula, who were maliciously arrested by the state anti-corruption unit.
According to the DPP office, Semakula Sulait and Yusuf Semakula were illegally arrested without any evidence pinning them. A document seen by this media house shows that the DPP couldn’t continue with this case.
“This is to inform the Court that the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided to discontinue proceedings against SEMAKULA SULAIT & SSEMAKULA YUSUF, alias INVESTOR”.
The two were charged. with. 3 COUNTS: OF MALICIOUS DAMAGE TO PROPERTY C/S 335(1) OF THE PENAL ODE ACT, COUNT OF FRAUDULENT PROCUREMENT OF REGISTRATION OF A CERTIFICATE OF TITLE C/S 190(1) OF THE REGISTRATION OF TITLES, Act, Cap. 230.
After perusing through the file, DPP realized that the two were the rightful owners of the property and that their arrest was illegal.
This is not the first time the DPP has dropped charges against people who have been arrested by this unit. It’s now known that the anti-corruption unit is being used by mafias to fight genuine people and tarnish their names.
Recently, the president warned the head of this unit, Gen. Isoke, to stop harassing people. Many complaints have been lodged with the president and DPP about the way the state anti-corruption unit works.
Recently, the same unit invaded private property and arrested private security guards who were on duty and fully cleared by police HQs. Last week, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Gen. Otafire, wrote to the president over a private property located along Old Kira Road. Gen. Otafire wants the president to take action against Gen. Isoke. The state anti-corruption unit was created to fight corruption in Uganda, but they have failed their mandate and resorted to extortion and arresting innocent people. The DPP has embarrassed them by withdrawing trumped-up charges against Yusuf Semakula.
