RIP: Dr. Wilfred Olila
The Northern and Eastern regions on Saturday woke up to the shocking death of Dr. Wilfred Olila. He was a renowned specialist in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) based in Lira town. However, his body was found in Otuboi, suggesting that he was murdered from somewhere else and the body dumped there. His hands were tied, and bruises on his body, including on his head, point to possible torture before he succumbed to injuries and pain. At the time of his brutal murder, he was a lecturer at Soroti University.
Investigators following the matter say that one of the lines being followed includes that of a possible row with the family of his later brother Paul Okello. Okello died late last year. Being Okello’s younger brother, he was left in charge of the deceased estate. Okello was a businessman with a number of prime properties in Lira city. These include a building next to Voice of Lango FM along Obote Avenue and another near the bus park. Other buildings are along Kitgum Road. Okello had one official and youngest wife. However, he had children from previous relationships. Many children from his past relationships, especially the boys, refused to pursue education despite being sent to school. As a result, they saw their father’s property as theirs. This is contrary to the children of his official wife. These studied to the highest levels. However, following Okello’s death, a property battle ensued. A source adds that Dr. Olila could have been standing in the way of some of Okello’s older children who want to take on the widow over property.
“Our investigation is open,” a deepthroat source said on Saturday evening. “We are not leaving any lines unattended to.”
UMA speaks out
The Uganda Medical Association, a body of professional medics, condemned the murder of Dr. Olila.
In a statement, the Association said:
With heavy hearts, we mourn the brutal murder of Dr. Olila Wilfred, a selfless healer & lecturer at Soroti University. This senseless violence against a doctor, who dedicated his life to saving others, is unacceptable! Police, we await justice.
