The Uganda Human Rights Commission – UHRC – has summoned the Inspector General of Police – IGP – Martins Okoth Ochola to respond to allegations of violently stopping lawful gatherings and peaceful demonstrations contrary to article 29 (a), (d) and (e) and article 221 of the Constitution.

IGP Ochola’s summon is contained in a document signed April 27, 2023.

According to the letter received at the IGP’s office on the same date, Commission Chairperson Marriam Wangadya says the IGP is expected before the Commission on May 4, 2023 at 10am at the Commission’s Central Region office located at Plot 55 Katalina Road in Naguru.

Days ago, Buvuma District Woman Member of Parliament, Suzan Nakaziba Mugabi, and her supporters were brutally arrested.

Recently, MPs of Kasese, Soroti City, Mityana and Kiboga districts were as well victims of violently dispersed women’s Day Celebrations, while on Thursday, 11 Woman MPs who were holding a processing to deliver a petition to the Ministry of Internal Affairs were intercepted and brutally arrested. By press time, they were still detained at the CPS in Kampala on charges of holding an unlawful procession and assembly.
