Journalist Remmy Bahati’s brother and four others are in police custody, Kampala Gazette exclusively reports.

Last evening, the United States based journalist took to Twitter and announced a raid on her parents’ home in Fort Portal City. The raid, she said, led to the arrest of her brother and two of his friends.

Since then, there has been a battle (with the UPDF Spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye) on Twitter on where the suspects are.

However, a friendly source in security says that suspects are in Police custody for possessing an illegal firearm.

The suspects are: Frank Kanyesigye alias Allan, 28, a businessman (bar owner) and resident of Rwengoma A cell, Central Division, Fort Portal city; Kelvin Katungi (Bahati’s brother), 38, an accountant and resident of Rwengoma C2 cell, Central Division Fort Portal city and Isaaya Mugisa, 45, a businessman (bar owner) and resident of Rwengoma C2 cell, Central Division Fort Portal city. Others suspects are; Latif Abdul Asaba, 22, a turn man and resident of Rwengoma C2 cell, Central Division Fort Portal city and Peace Sadat, 38, a peasant and resident of Kisenyi cell, Central Division Fort Portal city.

“The suspects were picked up during an intelligence-led operation carried out by officers from different security agencies in Kisenyi and Rwengoma villages. It is alleged that on Saturday 01/10/2022 at about 0900hrs, officers at Fort Portal CPS received information that some civilians within the area had an illegal gun. Officers, backed by colleagues from sister security agencies and the area local leaders, immediately proceeded to the villages where the five individuals were found and arrested,” a deep-throat source told us minutes ago.

According to the source, the teams also searched the premises, but nothing was recovered.

However, some witnesses revealed to the officers that they had previously seen Kanyesigye with a pistol. The witnesses also recorded statements, our source says.

The suspects are in detention (at an undisclosed detention centre) pending “further interviews and completion of inquiries.”

Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga is expected to brief the media on Monday about the arrests.
