The bus arrived in Cape Town on Wednesday morning after 20 days on the road.
A Made-in-Uganda electric bus, the Kayoola Electric Coach, has successfully arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, marking a historic milestone for Uganda’s electric mobility industry and the African automotive sector at large.
The bus reached Cape Town on Wednesday morning after a 20-day road expedition, covering over 7,000 kilometers and crossing six countries. The journey is part of the Africa Electric Expedition 2025, an initiative aimed at showcasing Africa’s potential in sustainable mobility and testing the resilience of locally developed electric vehicle technologies.
“We’ve made it to Cape Town, everyone! After an incredible adventure spanning over 7,000 electric kilometers from Kampala, Uganda, we’re here, ready to showcase Made in Uganda to vibrant South Africa,” said media personality and influencer Brian Mulondo, who is part of the expedition team documenting the journey.
According to Elijah Turyagumanawe, a senior official at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Office of the President, the expedition demonstrates the reliability, endurance, and technical capabilities of Uganda’s homegrown electric mobility solutions.
“This is the first electric vehicle to traverse the African continent over such a long distance. It is a testament to Uganda’s innovation ecosystem and the potential of African-made technologies to compete globally,” Turyagumanawe stated.
The Kayoola Electric Coach—designed and produced by Kiira Motors Corporation—was tested through diverse terrains, border systems, charging environments, and climatic conditions. Its successful arrival has been hailed as a breakthrough not only for Uganda but also for Africa’s transition toward clean and sustainable transportation systems.
The bus will now be showcased at the Africa Electric Mobility Week in Cape Town, where industry stakeholders, policymakers, and investors will engage with the team behind the expedition.
