Ugandan environmental activist Henry Lutwama has been recognized for his tireless efforts in promoting sustainable energy solutions across Africa. Lutwama was awarded the prestigious “Future Africa Climate Innovation Champion 2024” award by Heal The Planet International Organisation.

The award ceremony, held at the Bidi Bidi refugee camp in Yumbe District on Tuesday, 17th December, was a testament to Lutwama’s dedication to combating climate change. His work in promoting biogas technology as a clean and sustainable alternative to traditional fuels has made a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions and improving livelihoods for rural communities.

Lutwama’s award was presented by Dr. Michelle Corral, a prominent American televangelist, and was part of Heal The Planet International Organization’s 10th-year anniversary celebrations. The event also featured a donation of relief items to about 5000 refugees and a medical camp providing vital services to hundreds of people.

The Award

As Lutwama accepted his award, he emphasized the urgent need for climate action in Africa. “We’re running out of time,” he warned. “Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it’s a harsh reality that demands immediate attention.”

Lutwama’s concerns are echoed by experts across the continent. Africa contributes a mere 4% of global carbon emissions, yet it’s disproportionately vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Seven out of the ten countries most vulnerable to climate disaster are in Africa, making it imperative for leaders to take decisive action.

Dr. Michelle Corral, also founder of Breath of the Spirit Ministries International, also handed Mr. Lutwama tree seedlings that were planted in the refugee camp as part of commemorating his works.

Viola Nabbale, a member of Heal The Planet International Organisation, praised Lutwama’s efforts, saying, “His commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions is inspiring a new generation of environmental leaders across Africa.”

As the continent grapples with the challenges of climate change, pioneers like Lutwama are paving the way for a more sustainable future. His award is a testament to the impact one person can have in driving positive change.
