Three people have died and eight others sustained injuries following a fatal road crash along the Kampala–Gulu Highway in Luwero District.
The accident occurred on March 20, 2026, at around 11:30 PM in Nkonde Village, Nyimbwa Sub-county.
According to police, the crash involved a white Toyota Hiace taxi (registration number UBR 333S) and a white Tata lorry (registration number UBG 873K), both driven by yet-to-be-identified drivers.
Savannah Region Police Spokesperson ASP Sam Twiineamazima said the Toyota Hiace was carrying passengers from Kampala to Amolatar District at the time of the accident.
“It is alleged that the Tata lorry, which was loaded with poles and traveling from Luwero towards Kampala, attempted to overtake a line of vehicles at Nkonde in Kalule,” Twiineamazima said.
“The maneuver resulted in a head-on collision with the oncoming Toyota Hiace.”
Three male passengers in the taxi died on the spot, while eight others sustained injuries.
Police confirmed that all the victims were supporters of Red Devo FC and were returning from a football match against Express FC in the Uganda Cup.
The injured were rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital and Luwero Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Luwero Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.
Police visited and documented the scene, and investigations into the crash are ongoing.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution while using the highway, especially when overtaking, and to strictly observe traffic rules to prevent such accidents.
