Kawempe: How woman was sexually assaulted and robbed by her neighbor
The police at Kawempe have arrested one Ssemanda Tony, a 28-year-old male, in connection with a robbery and sexual assault case that occurred in Kawempe Division on the night of August 17, 2024. Ssemanda, who was on the run after the incident, was apprehended yesterday, September 30, 2024, and is currently detained at Kawempe Police Station pending further interrogation.
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) confirmed the incident.
It is alleged that on the night of August 17, 2024, a group of about three men broke into the home of a 34-year-old female victim. During the attack, the victim was sexually assaulted, and her property, including cash worth Shs 200,000, two mobile phones, and a 32-inch television, was stolen.
During the incident, the victim’s child, who had been asleep in another room, woke up and turned on the lights, allowing the victim to identify one of the attackers, Ssemanda Tony, who was a neighbor. The other suspects remain unidentified. After the crime, Ssemanda fled the area.
“Ssemanda has a history of criminal activity and had previously been imprisoned for a similar offense. He was released in June 2024,” said KMP Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire.
Upon his return to the area, Owoyesigyire said the police received information leading to his arrest.
“A search of the suspect’s premises yielded a breaking implement and a knife, which have been recovered as part of the ongoing investigation,” added Owoyesigyire. “The Kampala Metropolitan Police is committed to ensuring justice for the victim and will continue to provide updates as the investigation progresses.”
He urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as “we continue our efforts to bring all those involved to justice.”
