Three people have been arrested following a mob action in the northern district of Lira.
On December 19, 2024, around 3:00 am, Okello Moses, a resident of Kirombe East Cell in Adyel Ward, was returning home from a birthday party. It is reported that he was tipsy. Upon reaching a location known as Apala Hill, he was confronted by individuals pursuing thieves who had stolen iron sheets. They mistakenly attacked him, believing he was one of the thieves they were chasing. Okello was saved by others in the crowd and taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital, where he later died.
Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma says that following this incident, the police in Lira initiated an investigation and have since apprehended three suspects:
- Awor Joan, a 30-year-old female
- Ocen John, also known as Langala, a 25-year-old male
- Ogwok Emmanuel, a 24-year-old male
Rusoke says that further investigations into the matter are ongoing.
He urged the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands.
“Arrest and hand over suspects to police,” said Rusoke.
