A maid in Makindye has been arrested for negligence resulting in the death of a baby left in her care. 

The suspect has been identified as Milly Nangozi, 14.

Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the incident.

Preliminary findings indicate that on May 16, 2024, Goretti Nakato left her 1-year-old son in the care of Nangozi. 

At 5 p.m. that evening, Nangozi was bathing the baby when a neighbor called. She left the baby in the basin to attend to the neighbor. On her return, the baby had drowned. Attempts to give the baby first aid proved futile. The baby was pronounced dead on arrival at Kiruddu Hospital. 

Owoyesigyire says that although the maid was arrested, she is underage (below 18) and that at that age, she was bound to make a mistake.

He adds that a 14-year-old can only work under supervision.

Owoyesigyire says the matter is now with the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.
