CP Godfrey Maate
The Uganda Police Force is mourning the death of Commissioner of Police (CP) Godfrey Maate, a senior officer recently appointed to coordinate security in one of the newly created electoral zones ahead of the 2025 general elections.
Police confirmed the development in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday evening, noting that CP Maate passed away in Kyotera District.
“We sadly announce the death of Commissioner of Police Maate Godfrey, Commander of Sango Bay Police Operations. He passed away yesterday in Kyotera District,” the statement read.
Although details about the cause of his death remain unclear, police sources indicated that arrangements are underway to transport his body to his ancestral home for burial.
Just a month ago, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba appointed nine senior officers to oversee security coordination in the newly created electoral zones ahead of the 2025 primaries and general elections. Maate was deployed to the Central Zone, covering Masaka West, Wamala, and Katonga regions.
Throughout his service, CP Maate held several key positions, including Police Attaché to the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), where he supervised the conduct and security of national examinations, and Commander of Sango Bay Police Operations.
His death, coming just months before a tense election season, has been described by security analysts as a major setback for police preparations aimed at ensuring a peaceful and well-coordinated electoral process.
