Man Utd eye Simone Inzaghi to replace Erik ten Hag as deadline set for INEOS decision

Simone Inzaghi has emerged as a serious contender to become the next Manchester United boss if Erik ten Hag is sacked.

Ten Hag is facing a losing battle to survive following last weekend’s crushing home defeat to Tottenham. It’s understood United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe will consider Ten Hag’s position in the next international break.

United face Porto in the Europa League on Thursday before travelling to Aston Villa, and Ten Hag needs to pick up some positive results to arrest the alarming slide of his team. United have won just two of their last seven games in all competitions, and find themselves languishing in 12th place in the Premier League table, four points above the relegation zone.

Ratcliffe is reluctant to sack Ten Hag, having given him a contract extension in the summer. He will seek the opinions of fellow owners the Glazers, sporting director Dan Ashworth and chief executive Omar Berrada before deciding his next move.

But Ratcliffe knows United are treading water under the Dutchman, and would target Inzaghi along with Gareth Southgate if he decided to make a change. Southgate has a lot of admirers at United and is close friends with Ashworth.

But United bosses have also been impressed with the job Inzaghi has done since taking charge of Inter Milan in 2021. Inzaghi has won five trophies with the Italian giants, including the Serie A title last season.

Inzaghi also led Inter to their first Champions League final in 13 years in 2023, before losing 1-0 to Manchester City in Istanbul. Inzaghi has made Inter hard to beat, but would be encouraged to introduce a more attacking stye to his management if he was to take charge of United.

The 48-year-old signed a new deal with Inter earlier this year, and it remains to be seen if he could be persuaded to accept the challenge of making United serial winners again.
