Mbale Floods Death Toll: Police, Uganda Red Cross Give Conflicting Figures
By An Executive Editor
The Police and the Uganda Red Cross Society have this afternoon given conflicting figures on the death toll following last night’s floods in the eastern districts of Mbale and Kapchorwa.
This after nearby rivers bust banks, flowing into the communities.
Earlier, Regional Police Spokesperson Rogers Taitika confirmed that five had died.
However, in a tweet, URCS Spokesperson Irene Nakasiita said seven people died in Mbale and three in Kapchorwa.
According to Nakasiita, the Society is working with community and district disaster management committees to support the affected persons.
By press time, search and rescue operations were still on-going.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja is in the region to assess the extent of the damage.
