The Uganda Police Force is mourning the death of one of its officers, Corporal (CPL) Odyeki Tonny, who died in a tragic road crash early Saturday morning along the Kyotera–Mutukula Road.
According to a police statement, the fatal accident occurred at around 4:00 AM near the weighbridge opposite Mutukula, when a speeding Mercedes Benz Actros truck, registration numbers T824DXF/T529EFJ, rammed into the rear of a police Land Cruiser (UP 1294T).
The impact pushed the police vehicle off the road, before the trailer overturned and rested on it, killing CPL Odyeki instantly.
Three other police officers sustained serious injuries. They have been identified as:
- CPL Obonyo Dennis (No. 49625)
- PC Muhimbise Kabonde (No. 69319)
- PC Wasswa Alex (No. 70193)
The injured officers were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
By press time, rescue teams were still retrieving CPL Odyeki’s body from the wreckage, while efforts to tow both the police vehicle and the truck from the scene were ongoing.
