The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) has officially handed over the site for the construction of the Teso Animal Breeding Demonstration Centre (TABDEC), marking the start of works on a major livestock development project in the sub-region.
The handover ceremony was officiated by the Chairperson of the NAGRC&DB Board, Mr. Ben Anyama, who described the project as a significant step toward strengthening livestock breeding infrastructure and extending services closer to farmers.
The centre will be established across two sites—Aoroko, covering approximately 61 acres, and Amujeju, spanning about 278 acres—forming a large-scale, integrated hub for livestock development.
Once completed, TABDEC will host a wide range of facilities, including administrative blocks, staff housing, a learning centre, artificial insemination (AI) training hostels, poultry and piggery units, hatcheries, fish ponds, valley tanks, feed production units, modern cattle sheds, and hay barns. The комплекс is designed to support multiple livestock value chains through breeding, training, and demonstration services.
Officials say the project underscores government’s commitment to improving access to high-quality animal genetics and modern farming practices. It is expected to boost livestock productivity, enhance herd quality, and increase household incomes across Bukedea and the wider Teso sub-region.
During the construction phase, the project is also anticipated to create employment opportunities for local communities through the engagement of local labour and service providers.
NAGRC&DB noted that the facility will play a key role in delivering improved livestock breeds, as well as providing AI services and hands-on training to farmers, positioning TABDEC as a cornerstone for livestock sector transformation in Uganda.
