The police in Napak have in custody one of their own over murder.
The incident stems from a scuffle at 7pm Sunday evening in Lomuria-Angalepan, Lorengecora sub-county in Napak District where the fire victim of 28/1/2023 identified as Acan Margret was to be laid to rest. However, a scuffle ensued between the relatives of the deceased and those of the nine year old child who is alleged to have caused the fire incident in the village resulting in the death of Acan.
The police are said to have responded quickly and rescued two victims who were nearly being lynched by the angry mob.
However, there was a lot of resistance from one group which was carrying stones, bows and arrows that tried to harm the officers.
According to Regional Police Spokesman, AIP Mike Longole, “the officers shot on air to disperse them and unfortunately, a stray bullet hit Achia Mariko and died on the spot.”
As Police we regret this incident, Longole said in a statement Monday.
“It is not in our Policy to shoot to kill unless the life of officers on duty is at stake.
We have opened up a case of murder by shooting to investigate more on the action of our officers and the scene will be revisited by the investigation team to collect more evidence. We request the community remain calm and cooperate with them.”
