The 4 rebel MPs
For the last 15 years, there have been names: Muhammad Nsereko, Theodore Ssekikubo, Barnabas Tinkasime, and Wilfred Nuwagaba.
Nsereko ruled Kampala Central for 15 years (3 terms). He recently announced that he will not seek reelection in the next election. Ssekikubo was defeated last Thursday in Lwemiyaga after nearly 20 years as MP. Tinkasimire, too, was defeated in the just concluded NRM primaries. It is not clear if Nuwagaba contested in the NRM primaries. However, his longtime rival, Protazio Begumiza, won the flag for Ngorwa East.
For a long time, the four were known for being resistant from the inside of the NRM party. All of them are lawyers.
In early 2021, the Constitutional Court ordered that the four be expelled from Parliament. Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga declined.
However, later the Supreme Court judges ruled that Kadaga, was constitutional when she refused to expel the MPs.
It remains to be seen if Ssekikubo, Tinkasimire, and Nuwagaba will seek reelection as Independent candidates in the 2026 general polls.
