The National Unity Platform (NUP) has suffered another political setback after its parliamentary candidate for Mbarara City North, Peter Mpaka, abruptly withdrew from the 2026 race.
Mpaka, who is also the brother of incumbent MP Mwine Mpaka, announced on Monday that he had stepped down due to financial hardships and what he described as the party’s failure to support its own candidates.
He further revealed that he had quit NUP entirely, saying the party had promised campaign facilitation but failed to deliver.
“I have encountered financial challenges that could not allow me to stay in the race. Our party had committed to sponsor us but failed to fulfil its commitment,” he stated.
Political observers say the development leaves NUP exposed, especially since the party may have unknowingly fielded a candidate running against his own sibling, raising questions about vetting and internal coordination.
The Mpaka family is closely linked to junior Agriculture Minister Bright Rwamirama, adding another layer of complexity to the race dynamics.
This is not the first time NUP’s credibility has been tested. Recently, Speaker Anita Among outmaneuvered the party, successfully placing her daughter on the NUP ticket in what was widely perceived as a political prank targeting the opposition.
Mpaka’s withdrawal leaves NUP without a clear alternative in Mbarara City North and deepens ongoing concerns about internal organisation, funding, and candidate management ahead of the 2026 elections.
