During the orientation of new Members of Parliament in the 12th Parliament, Kasilo County MP Peter Paul Emaiu, who defeated veteran politician Elijah Okupa in the January polls, asked whether the travel budget for MPs on foreign trips also caters for their spouses.
Emaiu, from Serere District, raised the matter before the Parliamentary administration, seeking clarification on whether MPs’ wives can be facilitated to accompany them abroad.
In response, Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige explained that the current travel budget is limited to Members of Parliament only.
Mwesige added that this restriction can only be lifted through an amendment to the Administration of Parliament Act to extend such privileges to spouses, noting that until then, Parliament is legally bound to fund only the MPs’ own travel costs.
