One shot after Police move to quell students strike

A student of St Bernabas Karujanga in Kamuganguzi in Kabale district is nursing bullet wounds after being hit by a stray bullet.

The police yesterday responded to a call by the school administration that students had turned rowdy.

It’s alleged that in the morning of Thursday, a student only identified as Jim falsely complained against a one Athlem Ninzeyimana, 18, to have stolen some of his properties from his suit case worth Shs 32,000 which included a memory card, phone battery, a book and an avocado, which led to his beating by other students.

This prompted Athlem to report them to the students’ disciplinary committee boss who together with other committee members investigated and established that instead it’s Jim who had stolen Anthlem’s groceries.

That’s when the students disciplinary body within their mandate, decided to punish those other students who had assaulted Athlem.

It was out of which a scuffle erupted and the chairman of the students’ disciplinary committee, Asuman Benon was badly injured by S.5 students alleged to have wrongly punished their classmate.

The school admin tried to calm them down but in vain hence called police for rescue.

Police from Kabale responded to quell the rowdy situation, and in the process, a stray bullet hit and injured Bright Muhumuza, a student of Senior III.

Regional Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident.

Maate said that the injured were rushed to Rushoroza hospital while Muhumuza was referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

The matter is being investigated Vide GEF 14/2022.
