There was total pain as tears rolled down the faces of parents and on-lookers at Happy Tots Kindergarten and Day Care in Nansana Municipality when a driver/parent dropping children at school unknowingly reversed over another child, killing the kid instantly.

The deceased has been identified as Terry Kawesi, 1.8 years old.

According to preliminary investigations by the Nansana Traffic Police, the incident took place in front of Happy Tots Kindergarten and Day Care, opposite Opportunity Bank, at approximately 8am, while vehicle registration number UAU 433U was dropping off children at the entrance of the kindergarten.

“Regrettably, as the driver began to reverse the vehicle, the child was struck, and the impact proved fatal. Immediate efforts were made to transport the child to the City Mortuary Mulago for a thorough postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death,” Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire says.

According to Owoyesigyire, Nansana Police station is diligently working to apprehend the driver, who fled the scene following the accident.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to remind all drivers and road users to exercise utmost caution and vigilance when in close proximity to children. It is crucial to be mindful of our surroundings and to prioritize the safety of vulnerable individuals, especially in areas frequented by children,” Owoyesigyire said.
