Parliament Nude Protest: Ringleader Siperia was dismissed from Makerere University in 2019 and her Mastercard scholarship withdrawn

By Executive Editor

About a week ago, Kampala streets witnessed nude protests against graft.

Three protesters were arrested, charged, and remanded.

Among them was Molly Siperia.

In this article, we reveal why Siperia is not new to street protests.

On October 22, 2019, Siperia led a protest of 12 girls, all students of Makerere University. At the time, she was a third year student there. The protest was about the fee policy. The policy was approved, following a report by a special committee of guild representatives that recommended a 15% increment on all undergraduate programs in the academic year 2018/2019. But the following day, October 23, 2019, Siperia was dismissed and her Mastercard sponsorship withdrawn by the university management for spearheading the strike.

Rape allegation
During that protest, they were intercepted and detained at Wandegeya Police Station. Days later, she accused the police of rape when she found herself on a sock bed at Mengo hospital. But the police said Siperia was athmatic, something that prompted her admission to the facility.

Runs to Kenya
Following that 2019 saga, Siperia ran to Kenya with claims that her life was in danger. Not much is known about what she was engaged in there. Although Ugandan activists were shocked to see her ‘commanding’ a protest on Kampala streets, they were not shocked about the nudity approach.
