Peter Banura
Kikuube District LC5 Chairperson, Peter Banura, has become the third district chairperson in the Bunyoro sub-region to lose his life in a road accident, raising fresh concerns over road safety among public officials.
Banura died following a fatal crash in Butyamba Village (Butyamba IDP area) in Kikuube Town Council, where he was reportedly knocked down by a speeding Toyota Hiace vehicle.
According to police in the Albertine South Region, the incident occurred when the vehicle struck the district leader before the driver fled the scene.
Banura was rushed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention but was later pronounced dead.
Police have since recovered and impounded the suspected vehicle as investigations into the incident continue.
Authorities are now working to identify, trace, and arrest the driver to aid in ongoing inquiries.
Banura’s death adds to a growing list of district leaders in the Bunyoro region who have died in road crashes. Previously, Hoima District LC5 Chairperson Kirungi Khadiri and Masindi District LC5 Chairperson John Majara also lost their lives in separate motor accidents.
The latest incident has sparked renewed calls for improved road safety measures and greater caution among motorists.
