Earlier today, we broke a story of how a congregant slapped junior Works Minister Musa Ecweru during a church service at St. Michael Catholic Church in Amuria. The suspect identified as Michael Okurut is in police custody Vide CRB 42/202.
However, we have learnt that Okurut’s anger dates back to May 2021.
This is because on May 10, 2021; Ecweru allegedly roughed up three Anglican priests over a land dispute.
The wrangle pitted St John’s Church of Uganda Wera and the neighbouring Wera Seed Secondary School, both in Amuria District.
The attack left one of the reverends bleeding on the head. The injured clergy were identified as Simon Peter Olato, Benjamin Otasuro, and Peter Eriku.
The minister allegedly claimed that the church encroached on the school land he lobbied for.
The incident did not go down well with the Christians.
Speaking after the incident, Rev Sam Ediau, the secretary of Soroti Diocese, said it was unfortunate that the minister decided to take the law into his hands. He said it was the school to have acted if the institution was aggrieved because the church donated land for the sub-county. He said the disputed area is a small piece of land and the minister is using his position to grab it for the school. Now, sources suggest that the Sunday incident is not far from revenge on what happened over one year ago.
