The second victim in the mobile money shooting in Ntinda has died.
Sabiti Banabas succumbed to bullet wounds on Friday morning. He was 30 years old.
He was shot after he attempted to save Tugume Albert Cook from his shooter. Tugume died instantly at his mobile money shop in an incident that occurred on Thursday evening. His shooters left with an unspecified amount of money. Tugume was the brother of deputy lord mayor Doreen Nyanjura.
Speaking after the funeral service held for her slain brother at St. Luke Church Ntinda, the Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor, Doreen Nyanjura, said they are yet to hear from security what has so far been gathered regarding the tragedy.
“We, as the family, have not yet heard from police on the preliminary investigations. We are still in the dark like everyone out there, apart from the stories from those who were near there,” said Nyanjura.
She added that the spent bullet casings were recovered by police, but nothing is known yet about the caliber used.
“Though the bullets (spent casings) were got, we still don’t know what kind of guns were used,” she added.
Police said on Friday morning that “critical evidence” had been recovered from the scene to help in the investigations.
“Police investigators promptly arrived at the scene and recovered critical evidence that will aid in the ongoing investigation,” said Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson.
During the funeral service, Nyanjura said the deceased was a calm and calculated young man with few words.
“He was a calm and calculated young man with a great future ahead of him,” she said.
Adding: “We need justice for Albert.”
Mr. Tugume Albert, 33, was preparing to close his shop when he was attacked by armed assailants targeting to rob his cash. During the scuffle, a boda boda rider, Mr. Sabiti Banabas, 30, attempted to intervene but was shot by another armed assailant waiting nearby.
The main target, Mr. Tugume, attempted to flee but was pursued and fatally shot by the suspects, who made away with a bag believed to have contained an unspecified amount of cash.
